Holiday

Summer holiday is a great time. A time for reloading the batteries, obtaining new inspiration and leave all worries behind for a while. I have just returned from a week in Dubrovnik. Holiday with my two sons. Despite extreme heat and a city overload with tourists—included ourselves of course—we very much enjoyed spending a week in the beautiful Croatian city right on the Adriatic Sea.

Holiday also means putting away all the regular tasks that fill up everyday life. Among other tasks, I left all blogging behind. As some of you, my regular readers, may have discover I have been completely absent from the blog sphere the last week. I do enjoy the contact that the blog provides, but it’s also nice from time to time to not have to think about the next post or how to answer the many comments.

However, I am back. And now I look forward to start a new season of blogging. Here are a few photos from my trip to Dubrovnik before I, as of next week, once again will start writing about the creative process that all of us photographers (and other artists, too) so much thrive on. The week in Dubrovnik was holiday, but of course, I could not let go of capture a photo or two, even if it’s not with the same focus as when the sole purpose with a travel is photography. But photographing is fun and inspiring no matter under what circumstance. No?

  1. so lovely! the buildings, the people between the buildings, the boats, the people between the boats, the holiday and the posts in between 🙂

      1. Would love to meet up if you are free. We arrive tomorrow (Tuesday) afternoon and leave early Sunday. Our plans are pretty flexible other than a boat trip on Thursday. We are staying right in the centre by the fish market. Let me know if you can meet up.

  2. Lovely impressions 🙂 The first one is fascinating – it looks as if some giant child has opened his hands and dropped all his playthings on a heap 😀 And in a way, what a relief from concrete, iron and glass! Though, there too, some people create very interesting buildings when you put aside the average highrises that crowd our cities nowadays… 🙂 Thanks for sharing…

  3. Dubrovnik looks like a beautiful place, Otto. Extreme heat sounds like way above 40°? Does it cool down in evening time? I find it hard to cope with the heat, but I very glad to see you managed to charge your batteries and have a great time with your sons. I too think it’s vital to leave all the technical gears and social media behind on a holiday. Looking forward to your next post. Have a great week,

    1. Thank you, Klausbernd, I hope you will enjoy the week, too. It wasn’t quite 40 degrees, but very humid, which makes the heat more intolerable. It didn’t really cool down in the evenings.

  4. What a beautiful spot! I have friends whose son is getting married somewhere in Croatia this weekend. I guess it’s where he and his bride met. Years and years ago my family had an exchange student from what was then Yugoslavia. She used to talk of vacationing in the area you visited. Sounded beautiful back then, looks like it’s still beautiful now! Glad you enjoyed your vacation!

  5. Thanks for posting these, Otto! A good friend visited Dubrovnik on holiday a couple of months ago, but he’s not much of a photographer. Nice to see what it looks like.

  6. Hello Otto,
I’m happy you had the chance to get away for some Summer time fun with your sons to recharge and explore. And such a beautiful destination by your captures here.
I’ll look forward to reading about your thoughts on creativity in your next post.
    Until then,
    Di 💐

      1. You’re welcome Otto. The mulling over topics can be part of the fun can’t it!
I know I’ll enjoy it as it’s such a lovely topic.
        Until soon…
        Di 💐

  7. Yes, fun no matter what the circumstances – and how nice that you and your sons got some time off. It’s nice to see a bit of the architecture. I just talked to someone (a Chinese American MD) who went there for his honeymoon and loved it. Welcome back!

  8. Your images amaze me because they all appear to have been shot in optimal light conditions. The show so much detail. And yet, I know that shooting scenes such as these rarely provides optimal light. It is usually a bunch of interesting but contrasty images…at least when I try it. Glad you had the opportunity to recharge your batteries.

    1. The trick (if there is such a thing) for not getting too much contrast in the photos, is to shoot in the late afternoon and closer to sunset. Thank you for the comment, Linda.

  9. I agree, it’s good and healthy to disconnect and recharge for a while. Sounds like a lovely break Otto. Enjoy getting back into the blogging.

  10. What an awesome city! The perfect place to unwind and recharge. I’m still editing photos from my vacation to Florida in June. It seems that these days, my camera doesn’t get much use until vacation!

  11. The beauty of photography is each shot holds the charm of the city/place where you’ve traveled ~ memories you have within and then the ability to share the joy and scenes with others. Dubrovnik looks like a perfect place to recharge and enjoy life with family and friends. Cheers to happy trails 🙂

  12. You really captured the vibrancy of city life and street activity in your photos, Otto. How wonderful to have had the time with your sons. Those times are probably not all that frequent, but always so meaningful. Setting the computer aside for a while is good for each of us!

  13. Rhythms are an important part of life: breathing, hearts beating, sunsets and sunrises, the movement from summer to winter and back. We need those rhythms in our creative lives, too, and withdrawing in order to re-engage is not only acceptable — it’s critical! I’m glad you had a good time on holiday, and I’m glad to be seeing a post again.

I’m especially fond of the first photo of the rooftops. Even in a city crowded with tourists, there’s a way to see it more clearly.

  14. Beautiful photographs Otto! I’m just about wrapping up the work I’ve put into my project that’s been so all consuming this last year or so. I will know the outcome in November and whether the work has paid off. The result so much doesn’t matter though, it’s been nice to be so absorbed in the creative process that as you say, we thrive on. I’m about to head back to Fuerteventura for most of September where I too will be recharging my batteries ready for the next project. Like you however, I won’t be leaving my camera behind! 🙂

    1. I am happy to know that your project has been progressing nicely – even if it has been time consuming. Enjoy the trip to Fuerteventura – and take some great photos we all can enjoy on your blog. 🙂

  15. Like you I appreciate the opportunity to take a break from the everyday routine. Even just a few days works wonders in resuscitating the creative juices!
