Summer is on the wane. I have probably done my last backpacking in the Norwegian mountains this season. Last week we hiked around the mountain area called Stølsheimen in the western part of the country. We spent some delightful days in rough terrain far away from people, in the middle of nowhere, with only sunshine, some showers, rocks, meadows and an occasional dot of snow here and there for company. Recharging and gathering strength again (and at the same time becoming very fatigued – if that makes sense…). Because of the absence of any means of communication I have at the same time been away from any kind of blogging. But I am back now, and will soon start to visit all your blogs again. Thanks for the patience.

  1. awesome photos.. some of the rocks have letter T written on them.. i wonder what that means. The teddy bear is cute, he’s on top of the world.

      1. i followed your link.. he’s very well traveled.. do you own him? do you always bring him along with you on your adventures? i think having him on a photoshoot is fun.

  2. This summer no mountains (yet?) for me because of works in progress at home. At least through your beautiful pictures I can feel the wind and the clear air! Grazie

PS: maybe in september a few days in the Alps…

  3. I love the way you treated these photos. They are even richer and more interesting. Your work inspires… thank you, Otto. ~ m

  4. Oh my, now I’ve fallen in love…with Ted! Such a well-traveled gentleman – I was especially surprised and pleased to see him visiting the Valley of Fire in Nevada. I grew up near there (in Las Vegas) so that’s one of my old stomping grounds. The petroglyphs there are fascinating.
PS: Summer hiking in Norway looks COLD! but beautiful…….

    1. As you can see in some of the photos, we were actually hiking in shorts and t-shirt, but yes, the landscape is definitely cold – at places. Fun that you like Ted travels. I agree with you that the petroglyphs are fascinating.

  5. Very rugged texture on a beautiful landscape that demands good hiking boots.. Someone took a can of paint with them to mark the rock? I could see the progression of the hike through the gestures and changes of clothing of your partner as well as the land itself.. And look at those clouds. I also like exploring the the small plants and features in such a large space.Very interesting photos.

    1. Someone did indeed take a can of paint with them – but over many – tens of – years. Yes, it is a demanding landscape in many ways. Thank you for your thoughtful comment, Jane.

  6. The processing (assuming these are shot on a smart phone) adds to the feel of wildness. I’m just back from 2weeks in Switzerland. The weather was not good – it seems to have been an unusual season across much of Europe.

    1. It does seem to have been an unusual summer in Europe, but the place I have been to have been unusual dry and warm. Except for this last hike. I am sure you had some great hiking in Switzerland as well, Andy.

  7. My fellow camera club member has a little frog comes along with us on some photo shoots and shows up in many pictures in amazingly creative ways.A lot of fun. I read about the trail mark -good idea as it could be easy to get lost in that terrain.Enjoy the hot tub when you get down to the valley. I sure hope to get to the mountains before fall, started a new job.

    1. It’s really fun to have a little fellow to photograph in all kinds of situations. I cross my fingers for a trip for you in the mountains before autumn sets in. Good luck with the new job!

  8. My time of holidays and my favourite subjects to shoot (mountain landscapes). Tusen takk for sharing this with us, Otto. Glad to hear you had a perfect relaxation time. The mountains I picked this year (Slovakia for a change) turned out to be noisy and expensive 😀

  9. I’m panting and breathless with my calf muscles aching as the intriguing mountain landscape that you have captured so well beckons and I am right there with you…well, almost! And it is good to get away from the pressures of our complicated lives and subject oneself to the caprice of nature.

  10. How wonderful to have time away, and really away! I’m really glad you were able to experience those beautiful mountains while you still had a little bit of warmth left in summer. 🙂 Your photos are just breathtaking. Otto. It’s hard to choose a favorite, but the fourth one is so beautiful!

    1. I am glad you liked the photos. Thanks for the feedback, Debra. I hope you are able to enjoy what’s left of the summer (well, maybe it’s summer all year around in California – at least how I would perceive summer…).

  11. Great that you got away to relax like this, Otto, and that you’ve also come back with these images. The treatment brings out the ruggedness of the terrain very well.

  12. Beautiful set of images, Otto. I love how you’ve brought out the texture of the rocks. As always, the lighting and composition are spot on.

  13. Your post-processing gave the set of images an old-world sensibility. It really works so well. There’s patina that draws me into each frames glorious landscape and small or large vistas.

    1. I tried to create a feeling of an old world, because for me nature is old, has been around much longer than us human beings – and will be around long after we have gone. Thanks for the lovely comment, Sally.

  14. Thank you for enjoying my post on Jerez, Sanlúcar and Zahara. I enjoyed visiting your site and agree with your ten tips for travel photography. It seems we both try to capture (in photos and words) the spirit of where we are and do research before and after we travel. Since 2013 I have used a Sony NEX-5N mirrorless SLR almost exclusively and I wear it around my neck, ready. I don’t apologize for looking like what I am – a tourist. I bought a safari type Tilley vest which has pockets galore, including one interior pocket big enough to hold the Sony when I need to put it away – at dinner, for example. It replaces, for me, three cameras with many benefits and a few compromises. But life is full of fortunate compromises…

  15. ah, it’s so soothing to be so removed from the modern world! congratulations on your respite – so many people don’t take time to ‘sharpen the saw’ and wonder why they are emotionally and physically weary.

the photos are beautiful. thank you for showing us your beautiful country!

      1. Long ago Stephen Covey’s book made a strong impression.. Two of those 7 habits quite often or I quote them to others… One is “Seek first to understand and then to be understood..” wow, does that ever diffuse conflict! the other is number 7- ‘Remember to sharpen the saw..’

It is so beneficial to take a timeout from the demands of work and society… Of course you learned that long ago and prompt others to do the same.

again, thanks for sharing those lovely images.. hopefully you have inspired others to get in touch with the beauty of isolated areas.

  16. This is the number one place to recover after my work in school. The Norwegian and Swedish mountains. Your presentation of them is of course magnificent. Photo,.texture and framing. Almost paintings…Thank you for sharing them!

  17. The photos surely let us travel in our minds with you all. And that last photograph just makes me smile! It is like joy captured momentarily 🙂 Welcome back from your holiday.

  18. Beautiful shots Otto, and it is great to be on a hike when you know it is likely the last one of the season…tend to enjoy it a bit more, trying to take in all you can. It must feel incredible to walk away from such a good summer 🙂

    1. It’s indeed been a great summer. It has invigorated and energized me. Now I look forward to a new new season soon coming up with beautiful colours and cold and crisp days (and some rain for sure).

Takk for dine vakre ord, Monica.

  20. Looks like the perfect place to refresh the mind and body without lots of workaday distractions. Love the processing and the exuberance of the last photo.

  21. What a wonderful way to recharge!
I’m afraid I am really behind in my blogging and reading as well.
This landscape is stunning and I can’t tell you how much I appreciate you sharing the beauty with us. It is like a breath of fresh air.
