Work and everyday life is calling again – as is my blog and all yours (and I am sorry I have not been able to follow up any of your postings the last couple of weeks). Thanks for your patience while I have been away. It’s been good to be away from everything, though, if only for a couple of weeks. Breaks are necessary to regain power and to recharge our creative minds.
These last couple of weeks I spent with my family in Spain on the south-east coast called Costa Blanca. We were based in the small town of Villajoyosa which is an old fishing village with a lovely old town painted in all the strong colours of the palette. Our stay in Villajoyosa coincided with their annual festival Moros y Christianos which is a re-enacting of medieval times. According to popular tradition the festival commemorate the battles, combats and fights between Moors and Christians during the period known as Reconquista which dates from the 8th through the 15th century. Surely fun to watch even though it also felt a bit awkward to witness a celebration of an expulsion of a group of people that still are abundant in southern parts of Spain.
During our holiday, we not only stayed in Villajoyosa, but went on a ramble around the near vicinities. We visit the historical city of Valencia, the third largest in Spain, we entered some of the exquisite caves in the area and we climbed El Castell de Guadalest, to mention a few. The old town of Guadalest is resting on the top of what looks like fragile rocks. In 1644 an earthquake destroyed the castle that mounts over the town, and later that same year another movement destroyed part of the town. Even more, but smaller earthquakes about a hundred years later took more of it. Now what is left of the old town is perched on the top of those steep rocks still remaining.
The holiday was good and relaxing, and I feel very ready to get back to regular business again. Of course I took pictures during our stay in Spain, but this was more than anything a family event, thus photography had only second priority and I did it more for fun and for capturing the family on tour than anything else. Nevertheless I post a few of the pictures here.
I look forward to slowly getting back into reading your blogs again, and I hope you have all had a fantastic summer as well. A quick reminder before I end now: Remember my picture critique is still open if you have photos you would like a feedback on.
Glad your back and your vacation. Shots very beautiful. Surely you already speaks perfect Spanish. 🙂
Carlos
Perfect Spanish? Not quite yet, but maybe one day… Thanks, Carlos.
Welcome back
Thanks, Don.
Welcome back, Otto!! Feels nice to see you again. Spain looks such a beautiful place in movies and pictures; I am sure you had a great time there with your family.
And these pictures are just awesome. I specially like the first couple of pictures.
Spain was great. Thank you for the nice words, Arindam.
Welcome back, Otto. Your photos are amazing. It looks like one colorful and lively town.Just beautiful!
Thank you so much, Gracie!
Nice to see you and to hear that you had a nice holiday… Welcome back dear Otto. These photographs are so beautiful, Thank you, have a nice week, Love, nia
Thank you, Nia!
Wonderful set of images that give a peek at the town’s ambience. Your post tells me that the holiday did its best to charm and give you memorable experiences with family. Welcome back to your blogging journey.
Villajoyosa sure did charm me – so much that I am thinking about teaching a workshop there at some later point.
Those first two photos in particular look they would make beautiful watercolor paintings. But then again, your photos are so lovely, why bother?!
One think doesn’t exclude the other, no? Thank you for the nice words, Mary!
hi otto, welcome back.. and thanks for sharing these lovely photos..

Thank you, Barbara. I will have to see if I can find some more pictures from Villajoyosa to publish here, then.
Thanks!
Great post-cards. Very appealing individually or as a set. Thank you for sharing this, sir.
And thank you for the nice words!
I looked at the photos before I read even a word of the blog, and thought to myself, gee, that really looks like Spain! The Moors threw me off the track momentarily, but as I read about Moros y Cristianos I remembered the festival. Glad you enjoyed your trip. Would love to go back to Spain myself some day.
Spain is a great country to visit, so I hope you will make it back one day, Alli.
Nice to know where you unwind, Otto. It looks beautiful. 🙂
Thank you, Jo!

Velkommen tilbake : ) Flotte bilder fra Spania, ser ut til å være et fint sted å feriere.
Det var virkelig et herlig sted, ikke så turistpreget som mange andre badesteder langs Costa Blanca.
The faces! Fabulous Otto! Welcome back:)

Hi Otto — what a great welcome back! I was smiling from your very first photo. So bright, so vibrant, so full of attention and life. And I couldn’t agree with you more on this line, “Breaks are necessary to regain power and to recharge our creative minds.” Glad you took some time off, and equally glad to see you back!
Thank you for the heart warming words, Melissa!
how charming to spend your holidays in such a historical place, Otto. is the last photograph part of the “old town of Guadalest?” the vibrant colors on the buildings…lovely! ♥
Yes, indeed the last pictures is taken at Guadalest. Thank you for the lovely words!

You will make us (pleasantly) jealous, particularly with this first photo (of colors and bathing). Welcome back, best, William, Montaigbakhtinian

Wonderful photos; especially liked the faces of the costumed men. The last photo looks like something from a fairy tale, & is a superb composition! Glad you got a break & feel refreshed; that is so important for all of us.
Thank you, Kathleen!
Nice to have you back Otto, fully rested and raring to go. Love the photos especially the colours.
Thank you, David!
Great photos. Your holiday sounds lovely and it was fascinating to your in depth account of the history of the area.
Thank you for the comment, Suzanne!
Splendid pictures ,very informative post.Thank you so much for liking my post (L.A Times..) wishing you the best.jalal
Thank you, Jalal!
Thanks for sharing a bit of your vacation with us. I love the wonderful colors, that “stacked” look of the houses all lined up like a child’s blocks, and that great clarity you have on these photos. Anything but realism would have destroyed their look. Very nicely done, Otto.
Thank you for the lovely feedback, Phil!
Excellent captures as always!!
Thank you, Deepak!
Welcome back, Otto!! great photo!
Thank you, Roland!
OMW I just love the coloured houses.. beautiful.. What a fun time to have visited.. Love it when traditional festivities are held!!

Wow ! beautyfull holidays colours…
Thank you Marie! And thank you for visiting my blog.
Wonderful picture of the castle at Guadelest. I am moving to the Costa Blanca next month somewhere around the Villajoyosa area a happy coincidence to come across your post. Stunning work, you walk the beauty way.
Thank you Michael! yes that is quite a coincidence isn’t it. I hope you will enjoy your stay on Costa Blanca.
Spain is on my bucket list, beautiful colors in the structures and a very intriguing #3 photo, well done. Glad everyone had a good time!
Thank you, Christina! I hope you will get to Spain one day. Best.
Wonderful images!!
Thank you, Judy!
Such vibrant colors in these images. I especially like the intensity of the men in their costumes, but the buildings with their varied colors are a close second.
When I see town saturated with color like Villajoyosa, I also think of the barren building codes in some communities that allow only certain colors. The city looks vibrant just LOOKING at it!
The old town of Villajoyosa is indeed very vibrant, but I don’t know if the colourful house are a result of regulations or just the owners’ own incentives to make an eye-catching place to live in.
I missed this post, Otto. Must have been a lovely vacation
I sure was wonderful. Thanks for checking out the post.
